City of Melville activates community grants program

The first recipients of City of Melville Council’s Canning Bridge Place Grants program have been revealed, with the projects set to activate the area with new events, activities, murals and shopfront improvements.

The nine projects include a Christmas market, a series of art workshops, fitness classes and an expo about peer support, health and wellbeing, as well as three new murals, lighting and bike racks for businesses.

“I’m pleased to announce the first projects that have received funding through our new Canning Bridge Place Grants, which cover everything from Christmas markets to murals, shopfront improvements to art workshops,” said City of Melville Mayor, George Gear JP.

“It’s fantastic that through the Canning Bridge Place Grants, we’ve been able to reinvest paid parking income back into the area for the benefit of the community.

“I’m excited to watch as these projects take shape and I encourage the community to support these projects by attending the events and workshops or checking out the new murals once they’ve been completed.”

The grant program was trialled for the first time during the 2022-2023 financial year with the funding coming from the Canning Bridge Parking Management Reserve.

The grant program reinvests paid parking dollars from the Canning Bridge Activity Centre back into the area to support place improvements to encourage a safer, more active and vibrant community and business precinct for all who live, work and visit the area.

Clancy’s Fish Pub Canning Bridge has received a grant for shopfront improvements.

The Activation and Events funding stream supports initiatives such as street parties, markets, and exercise classes, while the Shopfront Improvement stream helps to establish and improve outdoor dining areas, new or improved frontages and more.

The program is currently closed for applications, however the City is gathering feedback and reviewing for 2023-2024.
