Brisbane youth get Bloomberg backing for climate action

Brisbane has been selected as one of just 300 cities worldwide to receive funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies under the Youth Climate Action Fund.

The global initiative will allow Brisbane residents aged 15 to 24 to unlocks grants of up to $7,000 ($5,000 USD) for research projects targeting practical sustainability solutions.

“Brisbane is proud to be one of 300 cities worldwide selected for the Youth Climate Action Fund, backing practical, youth-led ideas that tackle climate change and enhance our lifestyle,” said Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner.

“I recently joined representatives from 45 cities at the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, where we worked to ensure cities like Brisbane can access more opportunities like this for our community.

“Our young residents bring fresh thinking to local challenges and this program gives them the support to turn ideas into real outcomes.

“Whether it’s planting more trees across our neighbourhoods, reducing waste or encouraging more sustainable transport, these projects will help improve our lifestyle and keep Brisbane moving as our city grows.

“We’re excited to see the next generation step up with ideas that protect what makes Brisbane so special as we strengthen our city for the future.”

Projects eligible for funding include:

  • Climate education and awareness campaigns
  • Environmental data mapping
  • Heatwave response and climate resilience initiatives
  • Community gardens and tree planting
  • Sustainable food and urban farming programs
  • Waste reduction, recycling and circular economy ideas
  • Walking, cycling and public transport initiatives
  • Youth-led climate leadership and decision-making programs

The program aims to empower young people to step up, build skills and deliver research-backed results that could make a difference across Brisbane.

Cities that deliver strong outcomes may also be selected for a second round of funding, giving successful applicants the chance to scale their impact even further.

Applications open 15 July. Brisbane residents aged 15 to 24 are encouraged to learn more and apply via Council’s website.
