Brisbane City Council has unveiled a giant digital clock in Queen Street Mall as the city begins its six year countdown to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner (pictured) says the OMEGA Countdown Clock will become one of Brisbane’s newest landmarks, celebrating a once-in-a-generation opportunity to host the world’s biggest sporting event and deliver a lasting legacy before, during and beyond the Games.
“Brisbane residents will now be able to watch the countdown to the biggest event in our city’s history every time they visit Queen Street Mall,” said the Lord Mayor.
“This clock isn’t just counting down the days until the Games. It’s counting down to the next chapter in Brisbane’s story.
“Every day it ticks closer to 2032 is another reminder of the lasting legacy the Games will help us secure to make Brisbane an even better place to live.
“The Olympic and Paralympic Games have never just been about four weeks of competition.
“They’re a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a lasting legacy that will benefit Brisbane residents before, during and long after 2032.”
Brisbane will join an exclusive group of Olympic and Paralympic Host Cities to feature an official OMEGA Countdown Clock, following iconic installations beneath the Eiffel Tower for Paris 2024 Summer Olympics and Milan’s Piazza del Duomo for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.
Previous official Olympic OMEGA Countdown Clock installations include:
- Beijing 2008: OMEGA Countdown Clock unveiled approximately four years before the Games.
- London 2012: OMEGA Countdown Clock installed in Trafalgar Square to mark the 500-day countdown.
- Paris 2024: OMEGA Countdown Clock revealed one year before the Games beneath the Eiffel Tower.
- Milano Cortina 2026: OMEGA Countdown Clock introduced one year before the Winter Games in Piazza del Duomo.
The Queen Street Mall installation is the first chapter of Brisbane’s Olympic and Paralympic countdown, with a bespoke Brisbane-themed OMEGA clock to be unveiled one year before the 2032 Games.
“Time has been ticking towards our Games and today, OMEGA has officially unveiled a Countdown Clock to aid us in remaining on track and reminding the world that in six years’ time, our city, state and nation will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Brisbane 2032 President, Andrew Liveris.
“We’ve achieved a lot to date and there’s plenty more that we’ll deliver together.
“From legacy infrastructure to Emblems revealed, our Sports Programme and venues confirmed to the design of medals, mascots and more.
“The next six years will pass by quickly and OMEGA’s Countdown Clock revealed today makes our moment in time even more real.”
