Brisbane Lord Mayor to address world’s largest climate conference

The City of Brisbane has been invited to participate in the world’s biggest climate change conference.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner will join the official Australian Government delegation to the United Nation’s 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) in Egypt later this month and has been asked to speak during the event.

Lord Mayor Schrinner said COP27 will be a unique chance to showcase Brisbane on the world stage ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“Brisbane is a clean, green and sustainable city and our enviable lifestyle and strong economy has made us the fastest growing capital city in the country,” he said.

“COP27 is the world’s preeminent conference on climate change and our participation in this event will be an incredible opportunity to show the world what Brisbane has to offer.

“Building our city’s global reputation as a leading destination that is strongly focusing on sustainability is vitally important as we head towards the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

The Lord Mayor has been asked to host an event in the official Australian Pavilion showcasing Brisbane’s clean, green and sustainable agenda, approach to inclusion and resilience and plans for a climate positive Brisbane 2032 Games.

He was also nominated by the Federal Government to participate in a workshop on subnational climate action in the Japanese Pavilion.

“Our Council is the largest carbon-neutral government organisation in Australia,” he said. “From buying environmentally-important bushland to delivering grants to help clubs and community groups reduce their emissions, we work hard delivering practical solutions to improve sustainability.”

“We directly help our 1.2 million residents through initiatives like our food waste recycling scheme which is currently being trialled in 30 suburbs ahead of a wider roll out.

“Managing growth while maintaining an enviable lifestyle for residents is a key reason why Brisbane keeps getting better. COP27 is an exciting opportunity to tell the world about the Brisbane success story,” Lord Mayor Schrinner said.
