Belmont councillor faces court on indecent assault charges

City of Belmont Council says it has advised the Department of Local Government of the indecent assault charges currently being faced by Councillor Tamak Vijay.

Cr Vijay has been accused of indecently assaulting three women while conducting driving assessments.

“The City became aware of allegations and court proceedings against Councillor Vijay regarding incidents that are alleged to have occurred while he was working as a driving assessor for the Department of Transport earlier this year,” the Council said in a statement.

“The City cannot comment on matters before the court, however in accordance with the Local Government Act, we have advised the Department of Local Government of the charges against Councillor Vijay.

Charged: Councillor Tamak Vijay.

“The City is awaiting the Department’s advice regarding Councillor Vijay’s role at the City of Belmont,” it said.

The Council says it will provide full support to the Department of Local Government on the matter.

Cr Vijay appeared in Perth Magistrates Court earlier this month, where he pleaded not guilty to three counts of unlawful and indecent assault.

Police allege the 38-year-old was working as a driving assessor when the assaults took place.

The matter is expected to return to court in June.
