Bayside Mayor Laurence Evans has welcomed a new partnership between community housing organisations, the private sector and the Victorian Government to construct and manage social housing on the New Street site in Brighton.
“It is very pleasing to see progress on the redevelopment of the New Street site, particularly as it will provide a welcome boost to the number of social and affordable housing dwellings currently in Bayside,” Mayor Evans (pictured) said.
“The redevelopment will create much needed social housing in Bayside complemented by private housing at the site which is adjacent to Elsternwick Park.”
He said Council worked closely with the local community to advocate for the housing design to complement the surrounding neighbourhood in relation to the height and scale of the building.
Mayor Evans said Bayside welcomed the Victorian Housing Minister’s announcement and the future increase in public housing dwellings in the northern part of our municipality.
“Located close to shops, Elsternwick railway station as well as local schools and our wonderful open spaces at Elsternwick Park, the redeveloped New Street estate will be a great place to welcome new residents to Bayside,” he said.
