Bayside Council Libraries has launched a new scholarship to support young people in Bayside pursuing further study in library science, history, education or literature.
The inaugural Julie Fitzsimons Library & History Scholarship – launched by Council in partnership with the Nicole and Julie Fitzsimons Foundation – provides a $1,500 grant to an eligible Year 12 or Undergraduate student living in Bayside.
Named in honour of former library staff member and local historian, Julie Fitzsimons (pictured, below), the scholarship recognises her enduring love of books, history and learning. It will be awarded each year to support a young person following a similar path.
Mrs Fitzsimons died after being struck by a truck while crossing a street in the US where she had been visiting her daughter in May last year.
“This scholarship is a wonderful way to recognise Julie’s contribution to our libraries and local history, while supporting a young person to continue their education,” said Mayor, Edward McDougall.
“Libraries are places where people can discover new ideas, explore the past and keep learning. We are please to partner with the Nicole and Julie Fitzsimons Foundation to create this opportunity for a local student.”
Applicants must be undertaking, or planning to undertake, tertiary study in library science, history, education or literature. The successful applicant will be selected by Foundation and Council staff and announced at Rockdale Library in the first week of October.
