Bayside Council calls foul play on QR code vandalism

Victoria’s Bayside City Council is investigating the vandalism of COVID-19 QR code signs at playgrounds in the municipality.

In a statement, Council said vandals had targeted QR signs that had been erected across the region’s 61 playgrounds, putting the safety of residents at risk as a result.

“Less than a week after the signs were erected across the municipality’s 61 playgrounds, several signs have been deliberately damaged,” Council said in a statement.

“Destroyed and removed QR codes have been reported to Council at playgrounds at Tramway Parade, Beaumaris, Wishart Reserve, Hampton East and Royal Avenue.

“We are encouraging parents to report missing and vandalised signage at your local playground and anyone who witnesses any incidents of vandalism in a playground to immediately report it to us via 95999 4444 or bayside.vic.gov.au.”

Council said the closure of playgrounds had been tough on the area’s younger residents.

“When restrictions partially eased, we installed QR codes and new COVID Safe signage to allow safe play to resume in all our playgrounds.”

“We do not want the mindless actions of a few to spoil the safe enjoyment of everyone and encourage residents to monitor these important public safety signs.”

Council is currently assessing the amount of damage and the cost of replacement signs.
