Asbestos found in Broadmeadows reserve

Testing has confirmed a sample collected from Seabrook Reserve at Broadmeadows in the Hume City Council area on Friday has returned a positive result for asbestos-containing material.

EPA Victoria says further assessments and investigations are now underway by the Authority and Council.

Touch Football Victoria yesterday hosted the Doordash National Youth Championships Trials at the affected Broadmeadows reserve.

“Following a report from the public, this afternoon EPA officers collected a piece of potential asbestos-containing material from a garden in Dendy Park, Brighton which has been sent for priority testing,” EPA Victoria said in a statement.

“If testing confirms the sample is asbestos containing material, the source of the contamination will be investigated. However, the size and position of the fragment indicates it is not due to contamination in mulch laid at the site.

“EPA continues to respond to reports and inquiries about asbestos from the community.”

The Authority said Hobsons Bay City Council will continue to work to reopen parks in the coming weeks as Clearance Certificates are issued by independent hygienists.
