Alice Springs Town Council has awarded a contract for the concept and consultation stages of the proposed $19.96 million Alice Springs Public Library project.
The Council today confirmed the contract has been awarded to Tangentyere Design for the public consultation and concept design of the new library.
The project is being funded with $14.96 million from Northern Territory Government and $5 million from Alice Springs Town Council, to deliver design and construct a new, purpose-built Library above the Civic Centre car park — creating a modern, accessible community hub in the heart of Alice Springs.
“Our Library is one of the most valued shared spaces in Alice Springs. This next step is about listening carefully to our community so we can bring its vision to life,” said Alice Springs Mayor, Asta Hill.
“We want to hear from families, young people, seniors, local organisations and businesses — about what works, what doesn’t, and what the next chapter of our Library should look like.
“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a space that reflects who we are as a community and supports learning, connection and creativity into the future.”
The Council says Tangentyere Design is an Alice Springs-based organisation with a track record in contributing to a strong local community and fostering connection.
The proposed delivery model from Tangentyere Design involves a collaboration with Melbourne-based architectural firm Kennedy Nolan, combining local knowledge, established community relationships and experience in delivering complex civic projects.
This consultation plan will outline how and when the community will be invited to share their ideas. Details of consultation opportunities — including community sessions and feedback channels — will be released in the coming weeks.
Northern Territory Government Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment, Joshua Burgoyne said the awarding of the tender to a local organisation marked an important milestone in bringing the development to life.
“It’s fantastic to see the project moving forward, which we know will become a vibrant hub for the Alice Springs community well into the future,” he said.
“This library is being shaped by the community, for the community. We’re looking forward to hearing people’s ideas and encourage everyone to share what they’d like to see included in this exciting new space.”
