New Mayor for Sutherland Shire Council

Councillor, Carmelo Pesce, has been elected Mayor of Sutherland Shire Council, with Councillor, Jack Boyd, elected Deputy Mayor, following an extraordinary meeting of Council.

Mayor Pesce said it was a privilege to be entrusted with the role and responsibility of representing the people of the Sutherland Shire.

“I am incredibly honoured to have been elected Mayor of the Sutherland Shire and grateful for the support of my fellow Councillors,” he said.

“This is the community I call home, and it’s a privilege to serve the people who make the Shire such a special place. From our beaches and waterways to our sporting fields, local businesses and vibrant town centres, there’s so much that our community values and takes pride in.

“As Mayor, my focus will be on ensuring Council continues to deliver the services, infrastructure and advocacy that support the quality of life our residents enjoy.

” I believe we all share a commitment to doing what’s best for our community, and I look forward to working constructively with all Councillors to achieve positive outcomes for the people of Sutherland Shire.”

Mayor Pesce is a lifelong Sutherland Shire resident and local business owner who is serving his fourth consecutive term on Sutherland Shire Council, having first been elected in 2012. He served as Deputy Mayor in 2014 and later served eight years as Mayor.

He welcomed the election of Councillor Boyd – who has served as Mayor for the past two years – as Deputy Mayor.

“Councillor Boyd has served our community with distinction as Mayor and has been a passionate advocate for the people of the Sutherland Shire throughout his time on Council,” Mayor Pesce said.

“His knowledge, experience and commitment to our community will be invaluable, and I look forward to working closely with him as Deputy Mayor.”

Deputy Mayor Boyd said he was pleased to continue serving the community as part of Council’s leadership team.

“Serving as Mayor was a great honour, and I am pleased to continue contributing to Council’s leadership as Deputy Mayor,” he said.

“I look forward to supporting the Mayor and working constructively with all Councillors to represent our community and deliver positive outcomes across the Sutherland Shire.”

Mayor Pesce also acknowledged outgoing Deputy Mayor Laura Cowell, thanking her for her service and leadership.

“I would like to thank Councillor Cowell for her dedication to our community and her contribution to Council during her time in this important leadership position,” Mayor Pesce said.

“Her commitment and service have helped shape the Sutherland Shire, and I thank her on behalf of Council and the wider community.”
