Liverpool City Council Mayor, Ned Mannoun has welcomed today’s joint announcement by the NSW and Federal Governments to fund a much-needed upgrade to the M5 Motorway, calling it a vital step forward for Western Sydney.
Mayor Mannoun said the funding announcement was fantastic news for Liverpool and the growing region.
“The M5 is a critical transport link for families, businesses and freight operators, and this upgrade will significantly improve safety, reduce congestion, and cut travel times for thousands of commuters every day,” Mayor Mannoun said.
He said the joint investment will enable priority works along key sections of the M5 corridor, which connects Liverpool to the Sydney CBD, the airport, Port Botany and the wider motorway network.
“With the rapid growth of our population, the construction of Western Sydney International Airport, and the development of the nearby Bradfield City Centre, this funding couldn’t come at a better time,” Mayor Mannoun said.
“It shows a clear commitment from both levels of government to support the infrastructure we need to thrive.”

The NSW Government today signed a contract for the upgrade works with Seymour Whyte. The project includes a new three lane toll-free bridge over the Georges River and train lines at Liverpool, improving the connections between the M5 Motorway, Moorebank Avenue and the Hume Highway.
The upgrade will see the removal of the weave on the M5 Motorway between Moorebank Avenue and the Hume Highway and also include a new underpass at Moorebank Avenue.
The existing bridge over the Georges River, which connects the M5 Motorway to the Hume Highway and Moorebank Avenue, sees more than 2,500 trucks a day move from the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal Precinct onto the Sydney motorway network.
“This upgrade will ensure the conga-line of trucks coming in and out of the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal Precinct can flow more freely, keeping goods moving to their destinations, while delivering real benefits for commuters during peak periods,” said Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister, Catherine King.
NSW Roads Minister, Jenny Aitchison said the contract signing was a major milestone for the infrastructure Western Sydney needs.
“This upgrade will slash congestion and create a safer driving environment for the thousands of motorists who use this critical interchange every day,” she said.
“The contract is signed, the builders are ready, and soon we’ll be improving connections across our region. The extra lanes will remove the need for around 3,900 vehicles per day to weave between lanes, making journeys safer and faster for families and freight operators alike.”
