Kiama Council leaders rise to rural management challenge

Kiama Council has announced its involvement in the 2024 Local Government Rural Management Challenge.

The challenge presents council employees the unique opportunity to bring teams together from across the region to implement and advance a range of managerial skills that contribute substantial and visible benefits for individuals, teams and organisations.

Four Kiama Council leaders have been selected to participate in the annual LG Professionals NSW challenge, to be hosted at Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council 12-13 November.

“Phoebe Potts, Donna Flanagan, Helen Demertzis, and Peter Giouroukelis will step outside their usual roles and take on the responsibilities of different council director positions. This unique opportunity allows them to merge ideas, broaden their expertise, and gain hands-on experience in the practical application of policy,” the Council said in a statement.

“Through collaboration and networking, they will deepen their understanding of leadership and governance, while experiencing first-hand the complexities of policy implementation. The insights and skills gained through this program are expected to enhance their leadership capabilities, bringing new perspectives and approaches back into their respective workplaces.”

Tasks are scored by experienced markers, based on the team’s ability to synergise, communicate, prioritise and generate required materials.

Mayor Cameron McDonald said, “On behalf of Council we wish our team all the best for the 2024 Challenge. I trust that you will have an optimistic learning experience that you can share with your peers and return with revived insights and a fresh set of new skills.”

CEO Jane Stroud added, “The Management Challenge is a great opportunity to develop future council leaders, and I look forward to hearing from the team on their return about their experiences and challenges. Good luck to the team.”
