The Queensland Government has pledged $2 million in grant funding for projects which protect and enhance the State’s important marine plants.
Grants of up to $100,000 are available for projects that will deliver vital on-ground conservation activities in marine plant habitats through the new Grassroots Environmental Grants program.
Successful projects will focus on revegetation, weed and pest control, coastal sand dune and riverbank stabilisation, and erosion control that directly benefits marine plants.
Minister for the Environment and Tourism, Andrew Powell said the funding was another major investment in community driven, coastal conservation.
“We recognise the critical role local community groups play in protecting our natural environment, especially when it comes to our vital marine ecosystems,” Minister Powell said.
“Marine plants, from our magnificent mangroves to seagrass beds, are the foundation of healthy coastlines and fisheries.
“This funding will ensure grassroots organisations have the resources to deliver practical, on-the-ground action to conserve these precious habitats.”
