Yarra municipal monitor to stay

The municipal monitor at Yarra City Council will remain for a further three months, Minister for Local Government, Shaun Leane announced today.

Minister Leane said Yehudi Blacher’s appointment would be extended until 23 September 2022 as the Council continues to address its governance.

“Councils are the level of government closest to the people and it is important that they represent the communities they serve,” the Minister said.

“I am confident Mr Blacher will continue to assist Yarra City Council perform its role successfully and deliver good governance for its community.”

In Mr Blacher’s six-month report he noted his appreciation to Councillors and Council officers for their cooperation and support during his time in the role.

He said while Yarra City Council has made progress in its governance practices, further guidance was needed and work was still required to improve the Council’s financial sustainability.

Mr Blacher will support the newly appointed CEO, Sue Wilkinson, who will begin in the role next week.

Mr Blacher was appointed as municipal monitor to Yarra City Council for six months from 20 December 2021. He has considerable experience in local and state government, including serving as municipal monitor at Whittlesea Council from December 2019 to March 2020.
