Tasmania’s West Coast Council has expressed its frustration with ongoing and widespread failures of Telstra phone and internet services across the municipality.
In a statement, the Council said it acknowledges and shares the community’s deep concern about the ongoing and widespread failures of Telstra phone and internet services across the West Coast.
“The widespread issues being experienced in Queenstown this week are just the latest in a long list of outages spanning several years,” the Council said.
“Reliable telecommunications are essential infrastructure for our region. When services are unreliable or unavailable, the impacts are felt across the entire community — by residents, local businesses, frontline services, visitors and Council alike.
“For regional and remote communities like ours, phone and internet connectivity is not a convenience. It is critical for business continuity, emergency response, healthcare access and community safety.”
Council said it was actively advocating on behalf of the West Coast with Telstra and with all levels of government.
“We are making it clear that the current level of service is unacceptable, that these failures must be addressed immediately, and that solutions must be durable and properly implemented — not short-term fixes.”
“We are seeking clear explanations, transparent communication, and firm commitments to restore and maintain reliable telecommunications across our region.
“The West Coast deserves telecommunications services that work — consistently, safely and to an appropriate standard,” it stated.
