WA Govt signs $18m sports precinct deal for Serpentine Jarrahdale

The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale Council welcomed the WA State Government to the community yesterday as part of the Government’s Community Cabinet visit.

Shire President, Rob Coales greeted Premier Roger Cook and his team upon their arrival in Mundijong.

Community Cabinet offers regional communities the chance to directly engage with the Premier and ministers, bringing local issues to the forefront. With the State election on the horizon, this was a prime opportunity for the Shire to advocate for its top projects and priorities, said President Coates.

A highlight of the visit was the signing of an $18.5 million State Government funding agreement for the Keirnan Park Recreation Precinct by Minister for Sport and Recreation, David Templeman.

The funding will advance the development of a multi-use sports pavilion, car park, entry road, and ovals at the expansive 63-hectare site, adding to the $3.5 million already secured for planning and design.

“The Cook Labor Government is committed to supporting the development of sports and recreation facilities to meet the needs of our communities,” said Minister Templeman.

“It was an honour to be able to sign the $18.5 million financial assistance agreement today for the remainder of our Government’s funding for the first stage of the Keirnan Park Recreation Precinct.

“This precinct will provide much-needed facilities for this growing community and the Byford Bike Pump Track project will also provide a great new recreational space within Briggs Park.

“These projects will bring major economic and social benefits, ultimately allowing more people to get involved in sport and recreation activities and to benefit from an active lifestyle,” he said.

The Shire says it will continue to push for an additional $40.4 million to enhance the precinct further, with plans for 15 new netball courts and change rooms, as well as $12.5 million for a new BMX track.

Common Ground Trails Pty Ltd was recently awarded the contract for works on the Byford Bike Pump Track at Briggs Park.

Originally earmarked for a nature splash park, the $1.34 million in funding allocated as a 2021 election commitment was repurposed for the bike pump track project at the Shire’s request in March this year.

The pump track will include jump lines plus shade shelters and seating, with construction expected to begin in March 2025.

Construction is expected to commence in March 2025 and be completed by December 2027.
