Two senior execs resign from Snowy Monaro council

Snowy Monaro Regional Council today announced the resignations of two senior executives, with Chief Operating Officer (COO) Jeff Morgan and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Tracy Sligar (both pictured) set to depart the organisation.

In a statement, the Council said work was already underway to secure temporary coverage of the positions’ many important responsibilities.

“The community should be aware that Council is considering deferring the recruitment of permanent replacements until after the appointment of a new CEO,” the statement read.

The announcement follows Council’s April decision not to renew current Chief Executive, Peter Bascomb’s contract.

In a confidential session of Council’s April Ordinary Council Meeting, a majority of councillors voted against offering Mr Bascomb a further two-year contract.

Mr Bascomb joined Council in 2018 as Acting General Manager, bringing with him more than 20 years of experience in senior roles in local government.

Speaking at the meeting, Mayor Narelle Davis praised the transformational work and exceptional leadership Mr Bascomb had achieved during his tenure.

She said councillors believed that in order to best build on the work put in place by Mr Bascomb, Council needed to go to market to find the organisation’s next leader.

Snowy Monaro Regional Council Chief Executive, Peter Bascomb.

“Mr Bascomb has successfully steered Council and our region through amalgamation, bushfires, and the COVID-19 pandemic – and Council wishes to extend our sincere gratitude for his service to this organisation and our region,” the Council said in a statement following the April meeting.

Today, Mr Bascomb said he fully understood the reasons behind the latest resignations.

“While it’s a major loss to any organisation to lose such highly experienced and valued senior executives, I fully understand and accept the reasons for both Jeff and Tracy accepting new career opportunities,” he said.

“I wish them every success in their new endeavours, and extend the sincerest gratitude of both our region and our organisation for all the work Tracy and Jeff have done for the Snowy Monaro during their time with us.”

Mayor, Narelle Davis said: “Jeff and Tracy have done a fantastic job under difficult circumstances, and through their efforts have made Council a more modern, efficient, and financially sustainable organisation.”

Mr Bascomb will be responsible for steering the two vacant portfolios over the immediate short term, with further details about the replacement process to be determined soon, the Council said.

“There is no doubt that these resignations have created difficulties in managing the organisation’s workload, and it’s now my responsibility to develop plans to minimise the impact of the absence of these two key staff” said Mr Bascomb.

“I will be looking at all options including the option of bringing in temporary appointees to cover specific parts of the COO and CFO portfolios.”
