Toowoomba council selects flood recovery contractors

Toowoomba Regional Council this week resolved to select two preferred contractors to assist in the delivery of the region’s 2022 Flood Recovery Program.

Council says it will now undertake final negotiations with the two preferred tenderers with the intent of awarding the contracts in the near future.

The names of the successful contractors will be announced following finalisation of the contracts.

TRC Infrastructure Services committee chair, Councillor Carol Taylor said the contractors would help repair the damage from multiple flood disasters to the Region’s road network.

She said more than 1,800 roads across the Toowoomba Region have been assessed for flood damage, with approximately 5,500 sites damaged.

“These details have been included in 21 submissions for funding provided through the jointly-funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA),” Cr Taylor said.

“In selecting the preferred tenderers, it was imperative that Council consider the balance of engaging partners who have the capacity to deliver works of this magnitude with the benefits these works will bring to our local community in creating local jobs, using local suppliers where possible and supporting local businesses.

“These contracts will create great opportunities in our local economy, and we encourage our local businesses to make the most of these opportunities to help our Region recover.

“It’s been a year since the Toowoomba Region experienced extraordinary flooding events with up to seven floods in many areas of the Region resulting in three State Declared Disaster Events, which has seen more than 7600 emergency repairs to our road network.”

The permanent reconstruction phase of the Flood Recovery Program started in September 2022, with Council’s own Construction and Maintenance crews completing the priority works.

The full scope of repairs will be delivered jointly by Council’s internal Construction and Maintenance teams and the two preferred contractors.

“The community can expect to see a large number of flood repairs completed in the coming year, and we ask for patience from road users as our staff and contractors take on this mammoth task,” Cr Taylor said.

The recommendation was endorsed at the April Ordinary Meeting of Council.
