Toowoomba car park to make way for affordable housing

Toowoomba Regional Council is about to begin major reconfiguration works of a local car park to make way for a housing affordability multi-storey development.

The Station Street car park will undergo the removal of a significant number of car parks in the southeast area of the car park over the weekend of 1-2 March.

These soon-to-be removed car parks occupy the land purchased from Council back in 2022 by the Brisbane Housing Company (BHC), to build a 75-unit apartment complex with a mixture of social and affordable housing options.

Although the Station Street car park will downsize, recent monitoring shows the southeast area of the car park, often only used between 25-45% of capacity and never reached over 85% of capacity, said Council spokesperson for Transport and Drainage Planning, Councillor Trevor Manteufel.

“We don’t expect the downsizing of the car park to have a significant effect on the community. However, we do know residents have been asking for more housing options for quite some time,” said Cr Manteufel.

“Council is pleased to be contributing towards providing affordable housing options for our community. We are delighted to have the chance to alleviate some of the pressure residents are feeling because of the cost-of-living crisis.

“This is a step in the right direction for the future of our Region.”

He said the location for the BHC multi-storey development was chosen due to its proximity to amenities and public transport.

The construction of BHC’s multi-storey building will be managed solely by BHC.
