Toowoomba adopts rating review recommendations

Toowoomba Regional Council has adopted a number of recommendations from an external review into its rating categories.

The changes, which will come into effect in a staged process over several financial years, are aimed at enhancing equity and fairness and will see the introduction of a number of new rating categories.

TRC Finance and Business Strategy Committee Chair, Councillor Geoff McDonald said the rating review was an important element in ensuring Council’s rating framework represents best practice.

“This is the first general rating review undertaken by TRC and the recommendations adopted today by Council are about enhancing equity and fairness across the very diverse land uses throughout the Toowoomba Region,” Cr McDonald said.

“The new categories being introduced from July 1 this year will ensure that numerous land uses, including large retail, resources and energy, high-intensity rural, non-strata flats and lifestyle villages, are categorised in a manner that better reflects the impact that certain land uses place on Council’s network.

“The external review into Council’s rating categories showed that our current rating framework was generally very sound, but that there were opportunities to enhance equity and align some categories with best practice across local government by benchmarking TRC with other similar Queensland Councils.”
