Tenders called for Toowoomba soldiers’ memorial hall upgrade

Tenders have been invited for the construction of the Toowomba’s Soldiers’ Memorial Hall refurbishment project.

Toowoomba Regional Council Environment and Community Services Committee chair, Councillor James O’Shea said the project was established to restore and refurbish the building at 149 Herries Street, Toowoomba.

“The refurbishment will ensure the hall continues to serve as a monument to our fallen service personnel and a place of support for current and ex-service personnel from our Region,” Cr O’Shea said.

“The project will be completed as a multi-staged upgrade. The first stage will focus on urgent building repairs, including rear roof restoration works, and upgrading the front portion of the building.

“A lift, ramps and accessible toilets will be installed during this stage to make the hall accessible to people with a disability or limited mobility.

“A community reference group comprised of RSL, Council and community representatives has been in place since 2019 to provide input into the project”.

Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said upgrading the building had been a long-time goal of Council.

“The Soldiers’ Memorial Hall is a Queensland State Heritage registered building owned by Toowoomba Regional Council,” Mayor Antonio said.

“We want the building to be a safe, comfortable and accessible meeting and gathering space that creates a sense of community and, most importantly, is a shrine to the memory of those who lost their lives in conflict.”

Cr O’Shea said the project would support long-term development and economic growth.

“This is an important project which will create local jobs during construction and revitalise our CBD,” Cr O’Shea said.

“Council encourages construction businesses based in the Toowoomba Region to submit a tender application.”

Tenders close at 2pm AEST on Tuesday, 20 April 2021. Tenders can be lodged electronically via the LG Tender Box. Construction is expected to start in the second half of 2021.

The upgrade of the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall is funded by the Australian Government through the Building Better Regions Fund and Toowoomba Regional Council.
