Swan Hill council calls for calm on the water

Swan Hill Rural City Council is urging boat users to follow the rules after recent reports of unsafe actions on Lake Boga.

Council and Better Boating Victoria say they have received a number of complaints recently regarding the unsafe use of Personal Watercraft and Jet Ski’s at the lake.

The complaints report that some personal watercraft and jet ski users are travelling at speed within the 5 knots zone, which is located 100 meters from the shoreline.

Council Director Development and Planning, Michelle Grainger said it was disappointing to see users were not following waterway rules.

“Water safety rules apply to everyone and, like road rules, are there to prevent accidents from happening,” Ms Grainger said.

“It’s important to realise that our lake caters to not just PWC and Jet Ski users, but people fishing, swimming and partaking in other non motor sport recreational activities.

“Lake Boga is a beautiful asset to our municipality and is plenty big enough to be safely enjoyed by everyone,” she said.

Council currently maintains the foreshore signage and navigational buoys when required as waterway managers, while Victoria Police enforce speed limits and safety regulations.

Community members are encouraged to contact Victoria Police for any concerns regarding unsafe water use.
