Sunset shot snaps up Lord Mayor’s top photo prize

A Brisbane photographer’s sunset snap of the iconic Story Bridge has taken out the top spot in the 2024 Brisbane City Council Lord Mayor’s Photographic Awards.

The 2024 competition theme ‘Brisbane in its best light’ inspired over 1,700 submissions.

Photographer, Nigel Cowdery was awarded first prize in the open category for his golden shot titled A Bridge Climb at Sunset (pictured, main photo) which depicted a group of afternoon climbers on the Story Bridge.

Runner up, Tapash Alister picked up second place with their shot Sun (pictured, above), which shows a new perspective of suburban Fairfield and Kylie Facey’s New Farm Park Roses (pictured, below) blossomed in third place.

“Brisbane is bursting with artistic talent, and these awards celebrate the people in our community that show Brisbane in its best light,” said Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner.

“From over 1,700 submissions, seven were selected as Brisbane’s hero shots and captured scenes from across our suburbs.

“The awards are a fun and free way to get out, be creative and discover all there is to see and do in Brisbane.

“We encourage all residents to get involved in the programs that make our artistic scene even better.”
