Queensland Premier rejects Brisbane name change reports

Queensland Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk has rejected claims she is proposing to change the name of the city of Brisbane to its traditional equivalent ahead of the 2032 Olympics.

A radio report yesterday claimed the Premier was considering renaming the city ‘Meanjin’ – the Yuggera word for the finger of land on which central Brisbane sits.

“No, that is absolute nonsense,” said Ms Palaszczuk.

Queensland Minister for Resources, Scott Stewart, has also denied claims the Government is considering renaming the city.

In a statement today, the Minister said, “The Government has no plans – whatsoever – to change the name of Brisbane.

“Media reports to the contrary are completely false.”

The clarification has been welcomed by Brisbane City Council Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner.

“I welcome the Premier’s commitment today that her government has no plans to change Brisbane’s name,” said Lord Mayor Schrinner.

“However, clearly the Greens at a local, state and federal level are all hellbent on changing Brisbane’s name.

“Along with wanting to defund the police, backing break-and-entering and completely cutting road funding, this is just another example of how the destructive Greens will adversely impact every Brisbane household,” he said.
