Prahran prepares for pocket parks build

VIC

By late-April, the first sod will have been turned and construction will be underway on two new pocket parks within Prahran’s Mount Street precinct, City of Stonnington Council has announced.

The City’s Bangs Park and Mouclif Park will be the first of a series of new pocket parks and green interconnecting spaces that will be built through the delivery of the Mount Street masterplan, Council said in a statement today.

Adopted by Council in late-2019, the Mount Street masterplan will transform the precinct with people-friendly streets, engaging green spaces and attractive outdoor places for people to relax and enjoy.

The recipient of major awards from the Planning Institute of Australia in November 2020, and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) in June 2021, the masterplan has been recognised for its outstanding planning and as a project that delivers local place and neighbourhood benefits, with AILA stating:

“The Mount Street pocket parks’ design team and client are to be commended for their vision to create a new network of public open spaces that is socially engaging and environmentally progressive. Transforming underutilised spaces in an established neighbourhood is a triumphant display of prioritising healthy communities and responding to the needs of an ever-growing population in the inner suburbs.”

During the construction phase, the Bangs and Mount streets sites will be fenced off and detours in place. Pedestrians will be directed around the sites and any disruption to traffic and parking will be minimal.

Subject to weather and site conditions, Council expect the parks to be ready to be enjoyed by late-2023.
