Former City of Whyalla Council employee, the late Kathryn (Kathy) Jarrett, has been recognised for her outstanding contribution to South Australia, receiving a posthumous Special Mention at the 2026 SA Women of Impact Awards.
Ms Jarrett, who passed away earlier this year, was nominated by South Australian Premier, Peter Malinauskas, in recognition of her more than two decades of service to the South Australian community.
She was recognised in the Impact in the Community category for her significant contribution to the community and the enduring legacy she leaves across Whyalla, Marion and Palmerston.
Her work included playing an instrumental role in delivering the Whyalla Airport runway upgrade and empowering the Whyalla community to shape its future through the development of the What’s the Future Community Plan – 2030 and Beyond.
“Kathy was deeply passionate about giving the community a voice in shaping their future. She endeared herself to residents through her generosity of time, active listening, empathy, sage advice, and advocacy for social equity,” City of Whyalla Council said in a statement.
“This included interviewing dozens of locals about their experiences growing up, living, and working in Whyalla and what the city meant to them, exploring the city’s personality and identity.”
Premier Malinauskas described Ms Jarrett as “an extraordinary South Australian”.
“She dedicated more than two decades of her life to serving South Australians and making a difference in the communities she called home,” Mr Malinauskas said.
Mayor, Phil Stone also paid tribute to Ms Jarrett’s contribution to Whyalla during her time with council.
“Despite not being from Whyalla, Kathy had a genuine passion for the city – particularly the community – and was dedicated to improving our long-term prosperity,” Mayor Stone said.
“She enjoyed hearing locals’ stories and learning about Whyalla’s rich history, all while encouraging council and community leaders to be active champions for the city’s future.”
