Port Macquarie airport solar project shines

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has installed a rooftop PV solar system on Port Macquarie airport, two years after an upgrade of the facility was completed.

In line with Council’s Long Term Energy Strategy, the electrical and structural provisions for solar panels have been in place since the Airport Terminal Upgrade Project was completed in 2019.

This project was prioritised as a COVID-19 recovery initiative, and further supported by the Federal government, who provided funding for us to install the system under the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

“A week after installation and the system has been already been supplying approximately 80% of the terminal’s electricity usage, reducing costs and improving sustainability,” Council said in a statement.

“Our Long Term Energy Strategy provide guidance to enable us to continue to pursue and implement the most appropriate energy projects, with the aim for Council to source 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2027.”

The project was funded by the Federal Government under the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
