Parramatta to ignite inaugural Diwali lights competition

Festive lights, lanterns and colourful rangoli patterns are set to take over Parramatta next month for the inaugural Diwali Festival of Lights competition.

The annual five-day global festival of light is one of the major religious celebrations in Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism.

City of Parramatta Council Lord Mayor, Martin Zaiter, is inviting residents to decorate their homes, balconies or apartments with lights and decorations to celebrate Diwali from 18 until 23 October.

“Diwali is a festival that brings people together, no matter where they’re from, and we want to reflect that spirit in our neighbourhoods and skylines,” Lord Mayor Zaiter said.

“This competition is about more than just colourful lights. Parramatta is proudly home to one of the most diverse communities in Australia and we are thrilled to bring that joy to our streets during this vibrant festival.

“We’re proud to launch this competition as a new tradition for Parramatta and we can’t wait to see the incredible culture and colour on display.”

Entries open on Monday 22 September and close on Sunday 19 October at 11:59pm and will be judged on visual appeal, creativity, use of traditional Diwali decorations and overall impact.
