NSW Country Mayors commend departing LGNSW President

The Country Mayors Association of NSW (CMA) Chairman, Temora Shire Mayor, Rick Firman OAM says the organisation was saddened to learn of the unexpected departure of Local Government NSW (LGNSW) President, Broken Hill Councillor, Darriea Turley.

Councillor Turley was forced to stand down from the role following her council’s membership departure from LGNSW.

“Councillor Turley has given exceptional service to the Members of LGNSW, and she will be missed,” said Mayor Firman.

“CMA have had a close professional relationship with Cr Turley during her tenure, given we have a Memorandum of Understanding between both organisations.

“Councillor Turley has found herself in a rather unusual situation, with her Council of Broken Hill having resigned as Members of LGNSW. The CMA Board, Members and I have been impressed with the gracious manner in which Cr Turley has handled the matter – impressed but not surprised.

“We warmly thank Councillor Turley for her dedicated service as our LGNSW President,” he said.

The CMA Board also welcomed the appointment of new President, Forbes Shire Mayor, Phyllis Miller OAM.

Mayor Miller was the Rural/Regional Vice President for LGNSW and will serve as President of the peak body until its Annual General Meeting in November, 2025.

Mayor Miller is also a current CMA Executive Board member as well as a Past President of the NSW Shires Association and past Vice-President of the Australian Local Government Association.

“She’s earned solid respect from all levels of government – including the Opposition of the day – for her genuine, forthright, considered and determined manner,” Mayor Firman said.

“I know how close Mayor Miller and Cr Turley are – both professionally and privately. It’s been tough for them in recent weeks, however, the CMA knows that Mayor Miller will continue the terrific work of the now LGNSW Immediate Past President, Cr Turley.

“We wish Mayor Miller, her Board, CEO (Mr David Reynolds) and team nothing but the very best. CMA look forward to continue our strong relationship with LGNSW.”
