Nominations open for SA climate change council spot

Nominations are now open for a local government representative on the Premier’s Climate Change Council for a three-year term, the Local Government Association of South Australia (LGA SA) has announced.

The Premier’s Climate Change Council (PCCC) is a state-level committee established under Section 9(2)(b) and 9(4) of the Climate Change and Greenhouse Emissions Reduction Act 2007.

It is made up of representatives from State Government, business, environment and conservation, the scientific community and other sectors, including local government.

The PCCC’s primary function is to provide independent advice to the Minister for Environment and Water on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change, including by achieving energy efficiencies, increasing the use of renewable energy, developing methods to remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and establishing and achieving relevant targets.

The LGA SA is seeking nominations to fill a position on the PCCC for a three-year term commencing July 2023. Representatives may be eligible for a further term following this period.

There is one LGA nominated position on the PCCC currently held by former Lord Mayor, Sandy Verschoor. Following the 2022 local government elections, Ms Verschoor is not eligible for reappointment.

In this role:

  • you must be able to demonstrate a commitment to action to address climate change and have an understanding of the issues and impacts associated with climate change
  • you must attend five meetings per year
  • sitting fees are $12,383 pa (subject to qualifications).

The LGA is required to provide a shortlist of three nominees. The Minister will select an appointee from this list.

Section 42 of the Legislation Interpretation Act 2021 requires the panel of nominees to include at least one man and one woman.

The LGA Appointments and Nominations to Outside Bodies – Policy sets out the process to examine nominees with respect to the responsibilities and strategic importance of the outside body.

You must be a currently serving council member or employee of a council, or other local government entity (unless otherwise determined by the LGA Board of Directors).

Only nominations submitted by a council, following a resolution of council, will be considered.
