Nimmitabel transfer station asbestos removal underway

Snowy Monaro Regional Council has commenced work with licensed local contractors to remove surface asbestos fragments and remediate the scrap metal disposal area at Nimmitabel Transfer Station.

The work is being undertaken after Council received advice and recommendations from both an independent assessor and SafeWork NSW on what was required to guarantee the area is safe for the community, workers and the local environment. The work is expected to be completed by Friday.

In a statement, Council said the strict controls governing the management and disposal of the dangerous material ensured that the process would be completed safely.

“Asbestos that is collected as part of the clean-up process will be disposed of in accordance with all legislation, policies and standards that regulate the safe management of asbestos,” it said.

“Due to the scope of the remediation area at the scrap metal disposal area, a skip bin was installed last year for users of the facility to dispose of this material until remediation is completed.

“Further notice will be provided to the community when this work is complete and the scrap metal disposal area is reopened.”

Council has thanked the community for their understanding and patience during the period of works.
