New streetscape completed for heart of Artarmon

Willoughby City Council is celebrating the completion of its Artarmon Streetscape Upgrade Project.

The aim of the project was to enhance the streetscape, promote a sustainable urban environment and improve pedestrian safety and accessibility within the heart of Artarmon.

“The Artarmon Streetscape Upgrade Project signifies a commitment to enhancing our local infrastructure and creating a more vibrant community space for residents and visitors to enjoy,” said Mayor, Tanya Taylor.

The streetscape upgrade includes enhancements such as widened pedestrian footpaths, new and improved traffic signal lighting, a new pedestrian crossing, a shared path and cycleway, new lighting, street furniture and new public toilet and amenities building.

Upgrades to the Village Green parkland along the eastern side of Hampden Road include the construction of rain gardens designed to absorb excess rainwater to help protect natural waterways. It also features new landscaping with over 5,000 new trees, shrubs and ground plantings, including the incorporation of a native garden at the southern end of Hampden Road to promote a more sustainable urban environment.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully said the NSW Government has invested more than $4.6 million towards the streetscape upgrades.

“Artarmon’s Town Centre has undergone a major transformation following this urban streetscape upgrade project,” Mr Scully said.

“Residents will be safer thanks to wider footpaths, improved traffic signal lighting and a new pedestrian crossing. Urban biodiversity will also be enhanced with a new native garden featuring over 5,000 new plantings added ahead of spring.”

An official opening ceremony for the new streetscape is planned for November.
