New Rockhampton boardwalk vandalised

Rockhampton Regional Council has slammed a vandalism attack on the newly refurbished Riverside Boardwalk as “absolutely disgraceful”.

Council says the area was targeted by vandals on Saturday.

Parks Sport and Public Space Councillor, Cherie Rutherford said it was absolutely disgraceful to see this kind of damage inflicted almost immediately after the area underwent an upgrade.

“To see this kind of destruction continue to occur within the Rockhampton Region is extremely disappointing and heartbreaking,” Councillor Rutherford said.

“Not only does it cost money to rectify the destruction, but it also stops community members from using the area.

“On Saturday night the offenders destroyed power points and smashed bottles across the boardwalk.

“Our facilities team quickly responded, with the area being cleaned and electricians isolating the power by early Monday. Unfortunately, the power will have to remain isolated until repairs can be undertaken.

Communities and Heritage Councillor, Drew Wickerson said the Riverside Boardwalk is a place for families to enjoy, events to be hosted and everyday activities to be undertaken.

“I am disheartened to see yet another community area targeted by vandals,” Councillor Wickerson said.

“There is costly damage that requires rectifying which will take time away from the community members who want to utilise the area.

“It’s frustrating that Council will never be able to completely eliminate this type of behaviour, but with community help, we can work together to stop the people committing these types of crimes across the region.

“We urge anyone participating in acts of vandalism to stop and think carefully of the repercussions of your actions – this behaviour has serious and costly consequences for our region.

“Please report any damage to Rockhampton Regional Council on 4932 9000 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
