Ku-ring-gai Council’s plan for new housing as an alternative to the NSW Government’s transport-oriented development (TOD) policy has gained approval from the Government.
The Council says gazettal of the plan is the culmination of more than 12 months of consultation and planning.
“Our plan has been substantively accepted by the government and delivers certainty for the people living in those suburbs affected by the TOD,” said Mayor, Christine Kay.
“We are looking at the fine details of the approval and the maps accompanying the Council’s plan are attached to the Council report for next week’s meeting.”
The NSW Government first introduced its TOD policy in Ku-ring-gai in May 2024. Under the government’s policy, more than 20,000 new dwellings were expected to be built within 400 metres of Gordon, Killara, Lindfield and Roseville stations.
In November 2024, the Council commenced community consultation on alternatives to the TOD policy for Roseville, Lindfield, Killara and Gordon, which would deliver the equivalent number of homes while preserving built heritage and protecting the tree canopy.
Following community consultation, the Council adopted a preferred plan for new housing and submitted it to the NSW Department of Housing, Planning and Infrastructure with the aim of having it approved by the end of this year.
Mayor Kay said state government approval of the plan was after “detailed consideration by the Department”.
She said the Council would further consider the gazettal of its alternative plan at the November meeting on Tuesday and a report on the Council’s legal action against the government would also be considered.
