Barkly Regional Council has announced the appointment of Peter Harder as its new Chief Executive Officer.
Mr Harder (pictured, left) brings more than 20 years of senior executive experience across local government, private industry and the not-for-profit sector. His background includes leadership roles in mining, logistics, construction and information technology.
Mayor, Sid Vashist (pictured, right) said the appointment marks an important step forward for the region.
“Peter brings the experience, drive and commitment that Barkly needs at this moment,” said Mayor Vashist.
“Our Council is united in its focus on rebuilding confidence, strengthening our services, and ensuring our community sees real and measurable progress. Peter has already shown a deep respect for our communities and a genuine desire to work collaboratively. We look forward to working with him as he leads the organisation into its next chapter.”
In a statement, the Council also addressed recent online commentary regarding Mr Harder’s appointment.
“As is common in today’s social media environment, some online commentary has circulated regarding an incident from more than a decade ago during Peter’s time as CEO of another council. Peter and Council consider it important to address this openly and proportionately,” Council stated.
“The matter arose after confidential information from a closed council meeting was improperly leaked, resulting in a personal reflection by Peter being mischaracterised publicly as a judgement of others. Council and Peter want to be unequivocally clear, we represent and support all our community members regardless of their sexual orientation, gender, race or religion.
“Peter has consistently maintained, and his actions and relationships have demonstrated, his strong belief that every individual has the right to live their life free from discrimination. Council is confident in this also and has been reassured by Peter’s commitment to improving people’s lives through the work of local government. The matters raised in the media were appropriately investigated at the time.”
The Council further stated that its enquiries during the employment process confirmed that Mr Harder “maintained a positive working relationship with that council for many years afterwards and departed on excellent terms with a multi-year contract extension on offer”.
“Council has full confidence in Peter’s integrity, professionalism, and commitment to inclusivity. We encourage anyone with questions or concerns to meet with him directly. Peter operates with an open-door policy and is committed to being visible and accessible across our communities – including at local events such as Parkrun.
“Barkly Regional Council is confident that, over the coming months, the community will see the value of Peter’s leadership and his commitment to the region’s success. We encourage residents to focus on the work ahead, to judge on facts rather than online commentary, and to join us in supporting Peter as we continue building a stronger, more capable and community-centred organisation,” the statement ended.
