New CEO for Barunga West Council

Barunga West Council has appointed long-serving staff member, Tamara Harrison, as Acting Chief Executive Officer, following the resignation of Maree Wauchope.

Mrs Harrison, who has been with Barunga West Council for 23 years, will commence in the Acting CEO role from Monday, 3 November and continue until the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer.

Currently the Manager of Corporate Services, Mrs Harrison first joined Barunga West Council in 2002, beginning in the Rural Transaction Centre before progressing through a range of finance and administrative roles including payroll, accounts, and supervision of administration and finance services.

Prior to her Local Government career, she spent 15 years with the ANZ Bank in both Port Broughton and Darwin.

Mayor, Leonie Kerley said Mrs Harrison’s extensive experience and strong knowledge of Council operations made her a natural fit to lead the organisation during this transition period.

“Tamara brings a deep understanding of our organisation and community, along with more than two decades of service to Barunga West Council,” Mayor Kerley said.

“Council is confident she will provide steady leadership and continuity as we begin the recruitment process for a new Chief Executive Officer.”

To support the Acting CEO during this period, Council has engaged Lino Di Lernia to provide advisory and project support services. Mr Di Lernia has been closely involved in the Fisherman Bay Freeholding Project and brings senior executive experience in infrastructure, planning and corporate governance.

Mrs Harrison said it was an honour to take on the role and continue serving the Barunga West community during a period of significant transition. Mrs Harrison previously served as Acting CEO in December 2024.

“It’s a privilege to lead an organisation and a team that I’ve been proud to be part of for more than 20 years,” Mrs Harrison said.

“My focus will be on maintaining momentum across Council’s key projects and ensuring a smooth transition for our community, staff, and elected members.”

Recruitment for a permanent CEO is underway and expected to be finalised later this year.
