Woollahra Municipal Council is implementing new 40km/h zones in two of its most popular shopping precincts in a bid to improve pedestrian safety.
The Council says lowering the speed limit to 40km/h at Rose Bay Centre and Queen Street will dramatically reduce the risk of injury or death if a vehicle collides with a pedestrian.
The high pedestrian activity areas were identified for upgrade in Council’s Active Transport Plan in 2023.
“One of the aims of the 10-year plan is to deliver attractive, vibrant and safe walking locations for pedestrians, especially in our centres,” Council said in a statement.
Works include installation of new speed limit signs, speed limit pavement marking and asphalt threshold street prints. The speed limit in these areas is currently 50km/h.
The upgrades at Rose Bay Centre commenced this week and are expected to be completed within six weeks, weather permitting. The upgrades at Queen Street, Woollahra and surrounding streets will commence on Monday 2 June and are also expected to be completed within six weeks, weather permitting.
