Muswellbrook Shire Council has welcomed the NSW Government’s decision to include the AGL Hunter Energy Hub in the State’s new Investment Delivery Authority (IDA), describing it as a positive step toward accelerating investment and job opportunities in the region.
Muswellbrook Mayor, Jeff Drayton (pictured) said the announcement recognises the importance of the Upper Hunter as the State transitions its energy sector and works to attract new industries.
“Council welcomes the State Government’s decision to include the AGL Hunter Energy Hub in the Investment Delivery Authority,” Mayor Drayton said.
“Anything that helps streamline and fast-track major investment projects in Muswellbrook will help deliver jobs, attract industry and support the Hunter Region as we manage significant economic change.”
The proposed Hub will see the former Liddell Power Station site repurposed, creating opportunities for new energy and industrial development in the Shire.
Mayor Drayton said the establishment of the IDA reflects a growing recognition that coordination challenges between government agencies have historically slowed major infrastructure projects.
“The State Government should be applauded for establishing the Investment Delivery Authority and recognising the importance of the AGL Energy Hub by providing this support,” he said.
Council said the initiative is particularly important as the region prepares for significant industry transition in coming years, including the planned closure of BHP’s Mt Arthur Coal Mine in 2030 and the eventual retirement of other major assets such as Bayswater Power Station.
“Being able to bring forward new job and industry opportunities at the Liddell site before other closures occur will help give our community confidence that there is an exciting future for the Shire,” Mayor Drayton said.
Council also noted the potential broader economic impacts of upcoming closures across the region and said coordinated government support is critical to securing new investment.
Mayor Drayton said Council would welcome further support from the Federal Government to help bring the project and associated opportunities to fruition.
