Muswellbrook council begins bold new CBD build

A bold new vision is unfolding in the heart of Muswellbrook, with major construction now underway on a vibrant new public space and plans progressing for a landmark Regional Entertainment Centre as part of the Muswellbrook Town Centre Redevelopment.

Spanning the precinct between Brook and Hill Streets, the multi-stage development is transforming the Muswellbrook’s CBD into a vibrant and connected destination through upgraded public spaces, modern community infrastructure and new opportunities for business, culture, tourism and community life.

Guided by the CBD Improvement Advisory Committee, concept designs for the revitalisation of Bridge Street have been developed to create a pedestrian friendly environment and provide opportunities for outdoor dining and events. The revitalisation of the main street is part of Council’s long-term vision to prepare Muswellbrook for the future and strengthen the CBD ahead of the planned Muswellbrook Bypass.

A major milestone was reached with construction of Possum Park officially commencing on Monday 18 May. Regal Innovations has been engaged to deliver the project, with completion expected by December.

Possum Park will transform an underutilised area into a vibrant gathering place in the centre of town featuring landscaped green space, shaded seating, water play, sensory play, a children’s playground, interactive spaces inspired by the surrounding environment and local Indigenous culture, projection lighting, public art, pop-up activation spaces and upgraded pedestrian connections throughout the CBD.

Muswellbrook Shire Mayor, Jeff Drayton, said the redevelopment represented a transformational investment in the future of Muswellbrook.

“This redevelopment is about creating a modern a vibrant CBD that supports our community today while preparing Muswellbrook for the future,” Mayor Drayton said.

“As our region continues to evolve, projects like the Possum Park and the Regional Entertainment Centre will help create a town centre that attracts people, supports local business and gives residents and visitors more reason to spend time in Muswellbrook.”

In a major step forward for the Regional Entertainment Centre development approval has been given for the demolition of Brook Street Plaza and 116 Bridge St with the tender for this work going out in the coming weeks.

Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Property, Matthew Lysaught said the redevelopment was helping reshape the identity of Muswellbrook.

“The Regional Entertainment Centre is a game-changing regional asset for arts, culture and entertainment in the Upper Hunter,” Mr Lysaught said.

With designs now complete, the proposed facility includes a 400-seat theatre, large performance stage, orchestra pit, green rooms, loading dock and direct connection to the library precinct. Once completed the Regional Entertainment Centre will be the Upper Hunter’s premier destination for arts, culture and live entertainment.
