Murrumbidgee Council to auction properties over $270,000 in unpaid rates

Murrumbidgee Council has announced details of a public auction of a number of local properties due to unpaid Council rates and charges.

The auction is being conducted under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1993, which allows councils to sell land where rates have remained unpaid for more than one year for vacant land or over five years for other land.

Since announcing the upcoming auction, approximately $80,000 in outstanding debts have been recovered from property owners who have come forward to settle their accounts. Despite this, around $270,000 remains unpaid, the Council said in a statement.

Murrumbidgee Council Mayor, Ruth McRae OAM said that while going to auction was a difficult decision, it is one the Council must make as unpaid rates and charges are a heavy burden on both the organisation and ratepayers.

“We strongly encourage anyone affected to settle their outstanding balances before the auction date to avoid the sale of their property,” she said.

The auction will be held on Tuesday 16 September at 11am at the Murrumbidgee Council Jerilderie Office, 35 Jerilderie Street, Jerilderie NSW.
