The Murray River has been named one of National Geographic’s Best of the World 2025 destinations, placing it among 25 top locations across the globe.
The recognition shines a spotlight on the river’s natural beauty, diverse landscapes, and the unique experiences it offers.
“The Murray River is an iconic natural wonder, and this recognition confirms what we’ve always known – it’s a destination that people from all over the world need to experience. We invite everyone to discover its beauty and charm in Wentworth Shire,” said Wentworth Shire Council Mayor, Daniel Linklater.
In Wentworth Shire, the Murray River provides both residents and visitors with an abundance of recreational and lifestyle activities. The river is a natural treasure that forms part of the community’s identity, offering everything from houseboat holidays and water sports to tranquil retreats and local wine tastings, the Council said in a statement.

Key features of the Murray River in Wentworth Shire include:
- Houseboats: Hire a houseboat to explore the river at a leisurely pace while enjoying a unique and serene holiday experience;
- Water Sports: The smooth waters of the Murray are ideal for water skiing and wakeboarding, making it a favourite for thrill-seekers;
- Local Wineries: Sample the region’s finest wines at wineries and cellar doors, many of which offer stunning views of the river and surrounding vineyards;
- Australian Inland Botanic Gardens: Just a short drive from the river, the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens offers a peaceful setting to explore diverse plant species;
- Junction of the Darling and Murray Rivers: Visit the iconic spot in Wentworth where the two great rivers meet, offering a picturesque location for walking and photography;
- Birdwatching and Walking Trails: Nature lovers will delight in the abundant birdlife and walking trails that wind along the riverbanks;
