Brisbane City Council is set to roll out a further 12 automated flood warning signs on local roads frequently impacted by flooding.
Suburbs where the new signs will be built include Corinda, Oxley, Ashgrove, Runcorn and Bald Hills.
“Council is committed to do everything possible to improve road safety and ensure residents get home safely to their families,” said Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner.
“These signs will help achieve that during severe weather events and reduce the number of motorists still attempting to cross flooded roads.”
The signs are solar-powered and activate once a creek or waterway reaches a certain level.
They also contain a camera allowing for the waterway to be monitored remotely
Each sign has a ‘Road Closed Due to Flooding’ message that is LED-backed, ensuring it is highly visible to motorists at night
The sign will also alert Council once activated, allowing for a co-ordinated response
“We know we can’t prevent flooding, but we can help ensure Brisbane is better prepared,” Lord Mayor Schrinner said.
“Installing these signs will make it clearer for motorists that it is unsafe to cross a flooded road.
“The record-breaking flood event that Brisbane endured in February, which included a combination of river, creek and overland flow flooding all at the same time, also demonstrated how hard it is for our officers to manually erect road closed signs during such events.
“So having these signs installed at locations that are frequently impacted by flooding will also mean roads are closed quickly and Council officers can be diverted to other important tasks during disasters.”
