Mid Coast unearths asbestos at former landfill site

A former landfill site has been unearthed in Taree as a result of works to extend the NSW Rural Fire Service facility, Mid Coast Council has confirmed.

The Council says bonded asbestos fragments were found when minor earthworks were undertaken in preparation for the construction of a training area for the Rural Fire Service which is located on MidCoast Council land in Muldoon Street..

Following investigations, it was revealed the site had a history as a former tip, said Council’s Director of Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell.

Mr De Szell said the area has since been fenced off and proves no risk to the public.

“There is no danger to nearby residents or anyone who has used the site as the asbestos fragments found are bonded and present no harm in their current state,” he said.

“We have sectioned the area off as a precaution and have engaged expert consultants to conduct further investigations in the coming weeks.”
