Merri-bek council CEO quits to take on WorkSafe Victoria top job

The Victorian Government has announced the appointment of Merri-bek City Council Chief Executive Officer, Cathy Henderson, as the new CEO of WorkSafe Victoria.

Deputy Premier and Minister for WorkSafe and the TAC, Ben Carroll congratulated Ms Henderson on her appointment, acknowledging her wealth of experience across community, regulatory and public sectors and extensive background in local government.

“I congratulate Ms Henderson on her appointment. Her expertise and wealth of experience will build on the Government’s commitment to reduce workplace harm and improve outcomes for injured workers,” said Minister Carroll.

“Every worker deserves to come home safe from work. It’s why we are modernising the WorkCover scheme, giving security to Victorian workers, supporting businesses and keeping the system sustainable for the future.”

Ms Henderson has spent close to six years with Merri-bek City Council and also previously held senior roles at the City of Darebin and City of Port Phillip and at Waverley Council in NSW.

“Cathy is an empathetic and determined leader who drives powerful work through her team to deliver great outcomes for the Merri-bek community. While it is sad to see her leave, we are in a much better position as an organisation thanks to Cathy,” said Merri-bek Mayor, Helen Davidson.

“Cathy has been the driving force of customer-service excellence, by putting our community at the centre of everything we do as a Council. Cathy is widely respected as an innovative and supportive leader.

“Merri-bek is stronger and better positioned for the future thanks to her leadership,” she said.

In a statement, Ms Henderson said Merri-bek was “blessed with a wonderful, diverse community and a committed and effective Council”.

“It has been a privilege to work with the Mayor and Councillors, and lead the staff team – who strive every day to get better outcomes for the Merri-bek community. I know Merri-bek has a bright future ahead,” said the departing CEO.

Ms Henderson will conclude her role as CEO Merri-bek City Council on 24 October to take up the new role.

The Council says will appoint an Interim CEO before commencing the search for a new Chief Executive Officer to continue on from the work Cathy has built.
