Maitland City Council is marking History Week 2024 with the launch of a collaborative, commemorative publication that documents more than 40 of the city’s most photogenic and storied heritage sites.
Titled Maitland in Focus, the must have collector’s item has been a labour of love for members of the Maitland City Heritage Group, who partnered with acclaimed photographer Justin Reeders, historian Patrick Wilson and various local property owners and guest photographers.
“Maitland in Focus is more than just a book; it’s a gorgeous record of our city’s rich history and enduring legacy,” says Maitland City Council’s Heritage Officer, Clare James.
“We’ve captured the essence of Maitland’s unique heritage through stunning visuals and well researched narratives, presenting the city’s historical and architectural landmarks in a format that appeals and is accessible to both residents and visitors.”
This year’s History Week theme, ‘Marking Time’, aligns with the spirit of Maitland in Focus, delving into the stories, places and people that have shaped Maitland.
“It’s a tribute to our community and the diverse heritage that is woven through the fabric of our city, making it the perfect keepsake for anyone interested in Maitland’s history,” Ms James says.
Priced at $40, the book is available for purchase at Harry Hartog in East Maitland, McDonald’s Bookshop at The Levee, Maitland Regional Art Gallery, Maitland Visitor Information Centre, Maitland Historical Society and Morpeth Museum or online at mait.city/MaitlandInFocus.
