Global micromobility company, Beam, has commenced shared micromobility operations in Lake Macquarie, with a fleet of e-bikes to be introduced across the city.
Beam’s e-bikes will be available for use 24/7 within the local government area, improving transport options and connections for both leisure and commuting, Lake Macquarie City Council said today.
The app-based service will feature affordable pay-as-you-go rates, with a $1 unlock fee and $0.45 per minute.
Beam’s operating area will include the suburbs of Speers Point, Warners Bay, Cardiff, Macquarie Hills, Hillsborough, Booragul, Eleebana and the Fernleigh Track linking Charlestown, Redhead and Belmont.
“As a Council, we’re committed to promoting our diverse economy, the mobility and accessibility of our community, and the positive lifestyle and sense of wellbeing we Lake Mac residents enjoy,” said Lake Macquarie, Mayor Kay Fraser.
“The launch of Beam e-bikes in Lake Macquarie will allow more people to get out and about, stay active, explore our beautiful city, and support local businesses.
“I recently had the opportunity to attend The Beam Safe Academy at Warners Bay, where people of all ages were keen to hop on an e-bike and learn more about Beam, so I’m confident we’ll be seeing plenty of eager riders on streets and shared pathways across Lake Mac.”
The Beam offering will include:
- Beam’s Apollo e-bike fleet: Featuring tip-resistant dual kickstands, dual brakes, a bluetooth-locked helmet, swappable batteries and pedal assist
- Beam’s Booster platform utilises a blend of GPS-technology and partner incentives to stimulate economic activity at the local community level. Participation is free, with applications open for local businesses in Lake Macquarie via ridebeam.com/anz/booster
- Virtual Docking: Fixed ‘virtual’ parking docks will be seen within the app, with riders directed to appropriate parking spots through a combination of guidance, incentives, and disincentives.
Beam’s flagship rider education and enforcement program, the Beam Safe Academy, will also be in place, including:
- a pre-trip in-app safety briefing for every rider, featuring instructions on how to park and ride safely
- an in-app Beam Safety Quiz educating riders on the riding rules, with free credits offered to encourage rider education
- Beam Safety Ambassadors patrolling high-traffic areas daily, promoting safe riding and parking
- a three-strikes policy, with riders facing suspension for bad riding and parking offences. Those caught riding dangerously or breaking the law face permanent bans.
