Lake Macquarie bridge works begin

Work is poised to begin on the long-awaited Weir Road bridge at Barnsley, creating long-term safety and all-weather access for Lake Macquarie motorists.

The $7 million project involves the construction of a dual-lane bridge with wider traffic lanes, improved road approaches and a shared path for cyclists and pedestrians.

Lake Macquarie Mayor, Kay Fraser said that once complete, the bridge would significantly improve Lake Macquarie’s road network.

“The wet weather closures of the weir crossing have been an ongoing frustration for many motorists in our community. Construction of this new bridge will eliminate the need for closures in wet weather, providing a far more reliable route for motorists,” Mayor Fraser said.

“I’m excited to see works start on-site today and I look forward to the opening of the bridge in mid-2022.”

Liberal Patron Senator for the Hunter Region, Hollie Hughes said the construction of The Weir Road Bridge would assist traffic movements in the area.

“The benefit of the new bridge is not limited to safety improvements – it will also ensure this critical freight link remains accessible,” Ms Hughes said.

“More than ever, the continued rollout of priority infrastructure projects is important to support local jobs and back the Hunter Region’s growth, which is why programs like the Bridges Renewal Program are so beneficial.”

Council’s Manager City Projects, Adam Wakeman said The Weir Road bridge was a significant infrastructure project for the city, combining industry-leading design with environmental considerations.

“The bridge deck is supported by seven steel girders fabricated out of weathering steel, a first for Lake Macquarie bridges,” Mr Wakeman said.

“Weathering steel is a great choice for exposed bridges such as this as it is resistant to corrosion and provides a low-cost, low-maintenance alternative to paint coating.”

The Australian Government contributed $4.7 million towards the new bridge, with Council funding the remainder.

The weir crossing on The Weir Road, Barnsley will remain permanently closed to protect motorists following damage sustained during a storm event earlier this year.
