VICTORIA
Waste management contractor, Cleanaway, will continue to collect kerbside waste across Indigo Shire for the next decade, with Council awarding a 10-year contract worth around $30 million to the company.
The contract will see Cleanaway collect general household waste, recycling and food and garden organics (FOGO) from households as part of a consortium with other regional councils.
Cleanaway has held the current kerbside waste collection contract since 2012. The current contract is due to expire in June 2024.
Mayor, Sophie Price says Indigo Shire, along with the original participating councils were leaders in waste management, in particular the separation of food and garden organics from general household waste, with Indigo having one of the lowest contamination rates.
She said that while there will be no change to current service levels in the short term, Council will need to bring in changes including the separation of glass and the extension of the FOGO system to all residential properties, as required under new State law.
The Victorian Government has introduced the Circular Economy (Waste Reduction and Recycling) Act 2021 which includes a new four-stream waste and recycling system to be introduced state-wide between now and 2030.
Mayor Price says any decision regarding changes to service levels will be considered by Council at a later date and following community feedback.
