Heritage protection for historic Indigo precinct

Indigo Shire Council says a major milestone in the recognition of the Beechworth Historic Precinct’s value to Australia’s cultural history has been realised with the site added to the National Heritage List.

Federal Environment and Water Minister, Tanya Plibersek made the announcement, describing the Beechworth Administrative Precinct as a great addition to the country’s National Heritage List – joining significant heritage sites such as Abbotsford Convent, Rippon Lea, the Great Barrier Reef and Uluru.

Mayor, Sophie Price says the national recognition was fantastic news for the Precinct and the Shire and reinforced the importance of Council’s commitment to preservation and conservation of its most significant heritage assets.

“We are absolutely thrilled that the Federal Government has recognised the importance and significance of the Historic Administrative Precinct, which includes the Courthouse, Chinese Protectorate (Mining Registration Office), Gold Wardens Office, Police Station (the former Sub Treasury, Gold Office), Telegraph Office, Stone and timber lock-ups, Police Reserve and stables and Shire Hall (former Municipal Court),” the Mayor said.

“A special thanks must go to Council’s Heritage Advisor Deb Kemp and historian Dr. Jacqui Durrant for their meticulous and exhaustive work in preparing Council’s nomination documentation.”

“The research and stories detailed in the nomination material present a fascinating foundation for future exhibitions and programs, enhancing visitor and educational packages and experiences delivered by Council’s Precinct team.”

Mayor Price says the listing will have significant flow on effects from a tourism perspective and the timing of this announcement will hopefully enhance Indigo’s place in the Victorian Goldfields UNESCO World Heritage Listing bid.

“Beechworth remains one of the most intact examples of how gold rush government buildings were designed at the time, something we are very proud of,” she said.
